Gary Smallwood Returns to Hogging Up
We are stoked that Gary Smallwood is coming back to the Clear Brook stage! He’ll be performing on Sunday 6/29/14. He has shared the stage with or supported such great acts as Robin Trower, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, the late great Jeff Healey, Elliott Easton(the Cars), Marshall Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet, Bret Michaels, Guster, Catfish Hodge, Michael Fath and many more.
His guitar playing, both electric and acoustic has been highly sought after by musicians as well as the public. He has loaned his talents to many bands as a ‘sideman’ and in the studio on numerous recording projects, including Genghis Angus’ “Twelve Days”, Bryan Fox’s “Unfoxable”, Josh Burgess Band’s “Living & Dying Under Orion” , Jim Asbell’s “Man Overbored”, Leesburg Community Church’s “Give Me Jesus”, Bret Michaels’ “Rock My World” and countless other demo recordings.
Gary’s style of music consists of classic rock, soulful blues rock or just “flat out guitar rock”…he has a great appreciation for all types of music and sometimes will incorporate soul, R&B, funk, country and ‘show tunes’ into his playing. Gary also gives back to the community by playing shows for numerous benefits and charities throughout the region. He is a well respected and hard working musician, playing 200+ shows a year. Check him out here.
Burnt Orange Band Rocks the BBQ Awards : STAR POWER
We’re happy to have Larry and the boys from Burnt Orange Band rocking the BBQ awards this year on Saturday night both during, and after! In other words, they will be electrifying the award ceremony. If you haven’t heard them, you can listen to them here. In an unprecedented move, Larry and the boys feel it’s only right to rock the house not only after the ceremony, but DURING.
In most cases, the competitors are tired, having been up cooking all night, but now with some Burnt Orange Band rifts, they may be able to stay awake during the ceremony and feel like a star walking on that stage. Larry and the boys attitude it to being neighborly. After all, Culpepper is about 90 minutes away. In Virginia, that’s nothing. “We’re going to make them feel like rock stars!” Wow! Star power! By the way, like them on Facebook!
Michael Palmer 3rd Gear Headlining Friday Night
Anyone who was reading the sidebar may have seen our joke that Elvis was coming on Friday, but instead we have local hero Michael Palmer.
I first heard of Michael Palmer while he was organizing a benefit concert in his area. (Found: The Journal ) It isn’t every day that a guy from West Virginia assembles a group of bikers who come in support of raising money to end child abuse. That’s what Michael does, the impossible.
Michael Palmer gives cutting edge high energy performances. He spends most his life giving back for the gift he has, often playing many charity or benefit concerts each year. He’s well traveled, he’s sang on the Grand Old Opry stage, cut numerous demos in Nashville, had auditions on the Voice and America’s Got Talent, and opened for Todd Allen Herendeen.
He’s not yet thirty, but he’s been singing since five and bought his first guitar at age fifteen. He’s a military veteran! He promotes Freedom Water, of which a portion of every bottles helps our Active duty soldiers, veterans, their families and their children!
When I asked why he’s chosen family time over fame, he said, “Growing up poor in rural Winchester, Virginia I remember the days we didn’t have food, the thing that kept me going was music. I taught myself how to play Hawaii Five-0 by the Ventures and the rest was history. If God has given you a gift you use it, and that’s what I do. Even when I didn’t have a job, I entertained people with my music. Today, I live each day giving back when I can.”
I chose Michael to headline our Hogging Up BBQ Festival. I’m glad I did. He’s passionate about lots of things in life, his music and helping others is at the top of his list. Michael lives in Martinsburg, West Virginia with lovely wife and three children.
We can’t wait for his high energy performance on Friday night, June 27th, he’ll be playing right after the BBQ tour.
