Hogging Up Pennsylvania Big Fat Daddy’s Home Base
Big Fat Daddy’s would like to sponsor Hogging Up again, and has found what appears to be a good location for a future KCBS BBQ Festival & Competition closer to home base near York, Pennsylvania. This undisclosed location will power big rigs and have a covered building for the judges. We are currently discussing possibilities with the property owner who has ongoing construction and improvements to the site. It is unforseen when all these improvements will be completed and if we can book a date for 2016 but we are working on it. Things have been busy for Big Fat Daddy’s during 2015 doing the Factory Tour Stop for the County of York–the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. These barbecue tours raise money for Bell Socialization Services, a local shelter in York Pennsylvania. So far we’ve had visitors from 12 different states who have enjoyed their visit. This came after we’d been inducted into the Southern Food and Beverage Museum and on top of that filmed on the second season of Food Network’s Carnival Eats show for our Colossal Got Beef? ® Crabcake.

Recycled Trophies a Big Hit

We get asked a lot, just how many recycled trophies did it take to make enough for the barbecue festival? A whole lot! If you figure we gave trophies out for top ten in each category, plus specialty trophies and MVP’s, we made about 50 trophies out of over 300 old ones. This is simple, we break them down by disassembling and rebuild into bigger and better ones. We refurbish old parts and donate the toppers we donate to RetroChalet on Etsy (crafters use the toppers for wine stoppers.)
So if you consider for every 300 old trophies, we can make 50 new ones that’s keeping a lot of trophies out of the landfill! Thanks to donations from MD, DC, VA and PA who include schools and colleges, and we thank them!

North Vs South Contest Finalized
Sounds a little silly but here it is folks.
There are only 7 competitors competing for fame and glory in our North Vs. South contest. There are five from Pennsylvania and two from Jersey, all listed here. Basically this is an organizer’s award for the best overall best score of the teams that aren’t in the immediate panhandle area (so if you are a MD/VA/WVA team you are in the Best of the Panhandle Contest.)
North vs South gives teams who came from further away a chance to win something and a nice little thank you for their efforts. In this case, it’s $50 cash and a gift basket that includes goodies from Big Fat Daddy’s . Just a little something something to say thanks for coming all this way!
Will a Jersey team take the cake representing the North? Or will the Pennsylvanians step up and reclaim the South? We know, calling Pennsylvania a southern state is kind of cheesy, but hey, we had to make it work. Good luck to all of you!

Clemens Food Group Hatfield Quality Meats
We would like to give a huge HOGGING UP thank you to Clemens Food Group, owner of Hatfield Quality Meats for Sponsoring our event. Clemens Food Group was originally founded in 1895. They have had a great reputation all these years as being a leader in the food industry starting with the industrial movement in America. Back in the late 1890’s John Clemens had a farm in Maryland, later the site for Pleasant Valley Packing. He would go into Philadelphia to sell his wares – where JM Funk was starting Hatfield’s Pork processing plant. Needless to say, the rest is pretty much a great part of history.
Clemens owns these popular brands:
Big Fat Daddy’s has been faithful to using Ferrante’ Brothers special blend of gourmet mild Italian rope sausage at fairs and festivals all these years.
We found it originally in Baltimore, with Nick Ferrante’s original recipe brought back from Italy. We are happy to report this brand is now owned by Hatfield–with the same great tasting recipe kept secret all these years.
Thank you for this wonderful partnership! Make sure to visit Hatfield Quality Meats for quality saving coupons and to read about new products!

Hogging Up Welcome to Texas Brush Best Grill Brush Ever and most likely biggest too
Special thanks to Bill Flannery of Texas Brush who will be making some super cool Hogging Up Texas Brushes for our two top winners *Grand Champion and #Reserve Champion, and winner of the #Best of the Panhandle Award . We appreciate him donating them to our festival. This is in addition to any other prizes or trophies for these categories.
We love our Texas Brush, not only because it cleans your grill to a tee, but that it saves you money over using smaller grill brushes that get bent up and fall apart . Well, we used to have to replace our grill brushes every month and now we can just find satisfaction in walking so tall with such a big brush that doesn’t need replacing.
Here is our Texas Brush Review.

And We Are Back With Updates!
We’ve not been ignoring you. We have been busy!
Electric Generator and Better Pricing
We had to get things straight and map out the electric situation at the fairgrounds — originally having only a few spaces for the big rigs we thought about this, it’s going to be summer, and HOTTER than a pig’s nose with a fever. Most everyone is gonna want to have 30 or 50 amps, right? Our prices originally were higher towards big RVers, because we really didn’t want to have to bring in a generator.
Thanks to Mike Lackey’s advice (shout out to Bluemont’s own BBQ guy!) we’ve redone our application for better pricing to accommodate you big riggers. We will now be out pounding the sand and beating down the doors of some local businesses to help us bring in a generator for you guys.
APPLICATIONS WILL BE UP BY THE END OF THIS WEEKEND.
Governors Office
We’ve gotten things straight with the Governor’s office and hope to have our paper in hand soon.
Judge Emails
And now we have figured out how many competitors we can accommodate we will be emailing the judges official updates, BY THIS WEEKEND. Judges, make sure you have BigFatDaddys@verizon.net on your safelist or if not, check your SPAM FOLDER! If I don’t hear back from you by mid next week, I’ll be calling you up!
Sound Proposals & Music Contracts
We are still negotiating with a sound person to work with our bands. We are interviewing everyone and want to go with the BEST who can accommodate such bands as Stoney Creek Bluegrass, Circa Blue, Dangerous Mood, Avey Music and Kirsten Sowers……..(and more). We also want to make sure it’s someone who can work with us each year.
To our lovely bands, thanks for your patience and suggestions.
Top Secret Local Charity & Backyard BBQ for Sunday
We have approached a local non profit to help us with this festival. Although we want to donate to nationwide cancer charity CancerCare, we ALSO want someone who is in the town of Winchester or Clear Brook to benefit from this too. Once we have this firmed up we will tell you who our partner is.
We’ve also decided on a local Backyard BBQ for Sunday, so applications for that will be posted THIS WEEKEND.
Special Thanks
Special thanks for those of you who have helped with the victims of Hurricane Sandy. We know a few barbecue guys reading this have been there. We are from Baltimore and are sickened by what this has done to our neighbors in NJ and NY, many of whom are homeless or still without power.
More soon! Off to have a very busy HoggingUp Barbecue weekend!
Thanks for your patience.
Competitor Applications
Please note: Competitor Applications will be offline while we tweak some things.
Stay tuned for more exciting details!
Why You Should Come to Our Festival
I spent some time talking to Kit over at Deguello BBQ, and let me say this time on the phone with him was priceless. I learned a lot from the competitor aspect what they WANT and NEED to make the barbecue competition go smoothly. Unlike some promoters, my husband and I care immensely — we have been food vendors on average of 90 shows a year. We could tell you some horror stories about some promoters. So many times show production companies lose sight of what’s really important: making their vendors, artists, crafters, bands, entertainment, (and competitors happy.) It’s not about US, it’s about YOU.
So here’s some key points we feel are important and have come up with as promoters:
FOR THE COMPETITORS:
A) Clear Details : We know you want to know what you are getting and when. Maps, layout, clear instructions, rules, etc. For instance we just made a small change to the competitor form, so you don’t have to stay until the festival closes Saturday, (we revamped our diagram) so you are able to exit quietly after the results are read Saturday afternoon/evening. Sure, we’d like to have you stay and see all the cool bands we have lined up for Saturday night, but we know you may have to get some well needed shut-eye. We strive for ways to make your life easier.
B) Power and Water : These are essential for making a festival go smoothly and without them you can’t cook.. Luckily for us the Frederick County Fairgrounds is equipped and what they can’t provide we’ll be using generators. On a side note it’s important for us to know exactly what you need so that we have enough juice for everyone. If you need more, tell us ahead of time and we will work out a price and get it for you. (Or, as they say in BBQ-ville we plan to purchase enough juice to run a small mountain town.)
C) Good Reps : I hear that good KCBS reps are essential in making a festival run smoothly. Lucky for us we have Randy and Carol Bigler and we feel very comfortable with them and know they will take good care of US and YOU!
D) The Proclamation: Richard Leight, the Frederick County Fair Manager has requested one from the Governor’s office. Stay tuned as we are waiting anxiously to obtain such a wonderful piece of paper!
E) Respect & Communication : Quite honestly my husband and I have been food vendors at LARGE fairs and festivals for three decades. We’ve catered for famous celebrities. We’ve been lied to, promised the pie in the sky, and know how it is to feel uninformed and taken advantage of. We’ve been to some fairs or festivals that have been so unethical we wonder how they are still going. That is why we vow to do things differently.
TO OUR PATRONS, COMPETITORS, ARTISTS, CRAFTERS, BANDS, SPONSORS and FAMILY:
Know our Goal : Our goal is to put on a good BBQ & MUSIC FESTIVAL for the people of Winchester and the Panhandle area, and do it right. After 30 years of food vending, it’s my husband’s goal to put on a good show. Something that can grow in time and have entertainment for the whole family. We don’t want to do it half-ass, or cheesy, so we are taking a lot of time into the planning process. Our goal is to cover expenses and donate profit money to our charities of choice, (We are working with CancerCare but have been approached by others we may add). On top of this, we want to have a hella-fun-run-smoothly KCBS festival too! Sounds easy right? Well, if you only know how much time has gone into the planning you’d be surprised. Our goal is to have the townspeople of Winchester help us. Help us help you–make our festival a success by telling your friends, family, co-workers to come out and support our cause. Not to mention, if we work together, it may just end up being the second largest event to the Fair!
OPEN COMMUNICATION:
So with that, we encourage OPEN FEEDBACK about what you’ve experienced at BBQ COMPETITIONS or the FAIR that you’ve liked before, or things you have hated. We would love to know! Call my (Cindy) personal cell 410-908-9241 or shoot me an email at BigFatDaddys@verizon.net and give me some suggestions, feedback, etc.
