Join the class scheduled for Sunday 6/29/14 which takes place in one of the fairground buildings, taught by the wonderful KCBS reps Carol and Randy Bigler. Spend just a few hours of your day learning the ins and outs of the famous KCBS “blind judging” system. Learn what it means to be a CBJ judge and graduate that same day! Then you are able to apply to be a judge at KCBS sanctioned events.

This just in, if you want to be a premium vendor, you can now run the People’s Choice voting booth. You will be considered sponsor of this contest, wherein your vendor fee helps us purchase the pork for the teams.
In case you don’t know much about People’s Choice, this is where Saturday, competition samples are sold and blindly numbered to the public by our SPCA & Hogging Up Volunteers . Ten teams will be participating.
Once the public consumes the sample cups (knowing them only by number), they are instructed to vote for a winning number in the booth next door —> YOUR BOOTH! This may be an opportunity to have more traffic to your booth as your booth will collect and tally the votes and be in close proximity of the action!
- Someone from your tent may come up on stage and present the People’s Choice Award.
- Your vendor name will be listed as the “Official People’s Choice Voting Booth” like this, “Vote in the ABC Limo People’s Choice Voting Tent” on our website, People’s Choice page and front sidebar ($50 value).
- You will have more talk on our Facebook page and announcements at the festival.
- You are considered advertising sponsor of this contest, as your vendor fee helps us provide the pork the teams cook, and we thank you for that!
- Hogging Up will provide you tally sheets.
Limited to 1 Vendor. Quick, grab it here on the forms page. It will be removed once it’s filled. If you have already paid for a regular vending space, then you can pay the difference and upgrade.

We are stoked that Gary Smallwood is coming back to the Clear Brook stage! He’ll be performing on Sunday 6/29/14. He has shared the stage with or supported such great acts as Robin Trower, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, the late great Jeff Healey, Elliott Easton(the Cars), Marshall Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet, Bret Michaels, Guster, Catfish Hodge, Michael Fath and many more.
His guitar playing, both electric and acoustic has been highly sought after by musicians as well as the public. He has loaned his talents to many bands as a ‘sideman’ and in the studio on numerous recording projects, including Genghis Angus’ “Twelve Days”, Bryan Fox’s “Unfoxable”, Josh Burgess Band’s “Living & Dying Under Orion” , Jim Asbell’s “Man Overbored”, Leesburg Community Church’s “Give Me Jesus”, Bret Michaels’ “Rock My World” and countless other demo recordings.
Gary’s style of music consists of classic rock, soulful blues rock or just “flat out guitar rock”…he has a great appreciation for all types of music and sometimes will incorporate soul, R&B, funk, country and ‘show tunes’ into his playing. Gary also gives back to the community by playing shows for numerous benefits and charities throughout the region. He is a well respected and hard working musician, playing 200+ shows a year. Check him out here.
Pastor Stephanie will be working hard this year to bring a fun kids zone so that your kids have something to do while you shop, eat and listen to great music! There will be fun games like cornhole and more to keep the little ones occupied. The kids zone helps Blaze Youth Ministries, a division of Woodbine Assembly of God.
These guys work hard to help us, so let’s help them raise some money for their church!

They meet on Thursday nights at 7:00 pm.

We believe as a youth group that if it is all about fun and games
it is not worth doing. We make sure there is a spiritual impact to what
Brian Buchanan; singer, songwriter and guitarist, is no stranger to country music. With countless appearances both locally and nationally, Brian has made several appearances on the Virginia Dreams Center Stage television show and is currently a performer on the Shenandoah Jamboree at Shenandoah Caverns. His style mixes classic country integrity with new and fresh arrangements and delivery. He cites the Statler Brothers, Faron Young, Don Williams, Ray Price, Marty Robbins, Rodney Crowell, and Buck Owens as major influences in his style and songwriting. His new CD project, Around The Bend is a mix of new original material and classic country songs, all deeply rooted in the traditional country style.
Gary says, “We come from different places on the musical map but we all tend to gravitate towards music that is funky, bluesy and a little bit of old school R&B.” If you like bluesy rock with an edge, we think you will dig what we do.
RULE G-“The use of intoxicants or narcotics is prohibited”-one of twelve general rules in standard code adopted by Association of American Railroads, based upon previous regulations made by individual companies. Countless thousands of railroad men, especially boomers, have been discharged for violation of Rule G; not because of railroads’ objection to liquor itself but because a man under the influence of liquor is not to be trusted in a job involving human lives and property.

We’re happy to have Larry and the boys from Burnt Orange Band rocking the BBQ awards this year on Saturday night both during, and after! In other words, they will be electrifying the award ceremony. If you haven’t heard them, you can listen to them here. In an unprecedented move, Larry and the boys feel it’s only right to rock the house not only after the ceremony, but DURING.
In most cases, the competitors are tired, having been up cooking all night, but now with some Burnt Orange Band rifts, they may be able to stay awake during the ceremony and feel like a star walking on that stage. Larry and the boys attitude it to being neighborly. After all, Culpepper is about 90 minutes away. In Virginia, that’s nothing. “We’re going to make them feel like rock stars!” Wow! Star power! By the way, like them on Facebook!
I first heard of Michael Palmer while he was organizing a benefit concert in his area. (Found: The Journal ) It isn’t every day that a guy from West Virginia assembles a group of bikers who come in support of raising money to end child abuse. That’s what Michael does, the impossible.
Michael Palmer gives cutting edge high energy performances. He spends most his life giving back for the gift he has, often playing many charity or benefit concerts each year. He’s well traveled, he’s sang on the Grand Old Opry stage, cut numerous demos in Nashville, had auditions on the Voice and America’s Got Talent, and opened for Todd Allen Herendeen.
He’s not yet thirty, but he’s been singing since five and bought his first guitar at age fifteen. He’s a military veteran! He promotes Freedom Water, of which a portion of every bottles helps our Active duty soldiers, veterans, their families and their children!
When I asked why he’s chosen family time over fame, he said, “Growing up poor in rural Winchester, Virginia I remember the days we didn’t have food, the thing that kept me going was music. I taught myself how to play Hawaii Five-0 by the Ventures and the rest was history. If God has given you a gift you use it, and that’s what I do. Even when I didn’t have a job, I entertained people with my music. Today, I live each day giving back when I can.”
I chose Michael to headline our Hogging Up BBQ Festival. I’m glad I did. He’s passionate about lots of things in life, his music and helping others is at the top of his list. Michael lives in Martinsburg, West Virginia with lovely wife and three children.
We can’t wait for his high energy performance on Friday night, June 27th, he’ll be playing right after the BBQ tour.

We’ve decided to direct mail some special post cards for Hogging Up Festival out to Virginia residents. We found that 50% of our patrons last year were directly targeted when we went door to door with cards. Many people saw or heard about it that Saturday when we were on the news or in the paper. Many people in the town said “We didn’t even hear about it” Over a thousand top secret post cards we designed will give a discount off admission this year. It will tell the residents what we are doing with the festival. We asked the residents if they don’t want the cards, to find someone in their circle of friends who can use them!
Targeted areas include Winchester are dropping now!
Maybe your town!
Be on the lookout! Ask your neighbors if they get one to give it to you if you think they won’t use it!
Everyone loves a discount!
Judges, finally, the KCBS Judging applications for Hogging Up Virginia are up and live on the event forms page! Make sure you read carefully, as we are NOT accepting any emailed applicaitons. You will be notified that we have received it but this may take us up to 2 weeks so please be patient as we travel often.
Add HoggingUpBBQFestival@verizon.net to your safe list.
Application does not guarantee placement.
We will cut off apps early if we obtain a significant overflow.

We are excited this year to be working for the SPCA of Winchester this year. Last year you may have heard our main charity was CancerCare.org and we helped raise money for them in addition to helping 3 other local non profits in the process. Our decision is to mainstream our festival into more support for the local community of Clear Brook and Winchester for 2014. We are happy therefore to announce that we’ve taken the SPCA under our wing for our one of our core charities, who will be getting a percentage of the food sales. We hope you will spread the word and come out to our event, have some fun and eat some food to help us raise money for them this year. See other charities for 2014 HERE.
WHEN: June 27-29th 2014
WHERE: Frederick County Fairgrounds

3EyzBBQ took the Grand Champion title! Season two Pitmasters Stars were right here in Clear Brook cooking it up for fame and glory and headed up our BBQ tour to the public. Dan and crew were gracious enough to donate money back that they won to our charity cause and we can’t thank them enough for that.
What many people don’t realize is that our judges came from all over the country. Some as far as Indiana, New York, North Carolina, Florida and more. The KCBS uses a totally blind judging process!

WOW WHAT A GREAT PRIZE!
As you know, our first place , grand champion and reserve awards were made by Benchmark Custom Signs & Wonders. Phil tries to find reclaimed and upcycled wood, often using old wood cabinetry to make his signs. So then we had the dilemma of what to do from 2nd through 5th, because we wanted to give trophies. We heard your cry, that you hate bowling trophies. So, we took on a nine month project to do something different.
It took 300 Trophies and Nine Months to Obtain Enough Usable Materials.
Baltimore Recycled Artists including DoLoBo and myself had formed a group of teens who were interested in recycling and art. We had them on a nine month endeavor to collect as many vintage trophies as they could find. Soon their parents became involved. Together a small army scoured thrift stores, flea markets, and Craigslist. We put ads on Earth 411. People were donating. We received over 300 trophies circa 1950-2001.
We dissasembled all the trophies. We refurbished what we could, and recycled parts of what we couldn’t. Old marble got crushed into a garden bed and the metal parts went to the recycle yard. We ordered pigs for all and new plaques for 2nd-5th. We then bought a stack of Southern Planter magazines from the early 1900’s some dating 1905-1912. These were big in Virginia, hold a lot of history and focused on farming, cattle raising and pig sales. We felt it only right to somehow add them in.
The trophies were then rebuilt–complete with ads from Southern Planter and vintage parts. There are NO TWO ALIKE. We had our 2nd to 5th place winning trophies. But the kids weren’t happy. We had a lot of parts left. So….
They kept building.
The kids were determined to continue the trophy quest, they were having too much fun and this project gave them something to do. They decided that every winner from 6th to 10th will now get a trophy. They were going to get only a ribbon or certificate, but instead, now they will get a trophy. For these places 6-10th, the kids were in control. They don’t have the same plaques that the 2nd through 5th place winners do, but we are sure you will love to display it on your shelf.
Smaller trophies in front right were made for places 6-10 by the kids. They don’t have a real plaque but instead something the kids made on the computer. We let them have free reign but helped them with the assembling.
- The kids were kept out of trouble for nine months.
- They are now all interested in art and going green.
- Each trophy was handmade from old parts and refurbished or reassembled.
- We’ve saved over 300 trophies from ending up in a landfill, readjusting them into 38 contest trophies. Pretty cool huh?
- We’ve recycled the parts we couldn’t use.
- No two are alike.
WE ARE NOW STARTING ON TROPHIES FOR OUR NEXT HOGGING UP.
Oh, and I guess you are wondering what happened to all those bowling guys and girls from the old vintage trophies?
Here they are!
We can’t wait to find out at the Hogging Up BBQ & Music Festival held this weekend at the Frederick County Fairgrounds. See 26 teams compete for fame and glory. See 19 teams try out for the best of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia and be dubbed “Best of the Panhandle.”
