Hello Judges or Potential Judges,
Thank you for an overwhelming response of CBJ apps. We received almost 300 from 8+ states. As of March 17, we are removing the judge application from this website due to the overwhelming response and have told the KCBS we are filled. As announced here on this site as on January 8th, 2013 all judge apps received end of December on were going to high reserve or backorder status only because of the amount of applications. Here is a Q&A to answer your questions.
What does this mean and how were judges selected?
This means it’s a first year contest and we only anticipate having 25 teams or under. There’s no way we can use almost 300 judges. Each organizer does things differently, and for our contest we selected judges from a variety of states, not just the ones closeby. We did this on purpose, to bring people from ALL OVER to the town of Winchester.
Then, we placed the remainder of judges on a reserve or backup list. The first are applications Sept-January, the secondi s Feb-March. As new teams are added, more judges will be needed from reserve/backup lists. They will also be pulled from if cancellations should arise.
Who went to reserve/backorder and who was selected?
Applications received during September to December were separated by state. By January, we had received CBJ’s from IN, NC, WVA, MD, PA, NY, KY, DC, and VA. (Technically 8 states unless you consider DC it’s own) A few were selected blindly from each state and initial mailings, double checked for a mix of Master, TC’s, and newbees, and spot checked judge status to make sure they were current with the KCBS.
Reserve is a huge list, of those who were received between September to January. They will be pulled from as new teams are added. We kept receiving more from February and March, and we added those to the backorder list. Everyone no matter when their application received, should be kept in the loop with updates.
I haven’t heard anything / I emailed my form in and haven’t heard anything
If your form was received via snailmail or made it through the spam filter, you should have received e-mailings. The first one went out January 5-10th from BigFatDaddys. Since many of you had issues with us going to spam, we then resent everything from HoggingUpBBQFestival@verizon.net and even talked to some of you on the phone. The second update went out March 5-12. If you still have not received any updates, please check your spam, or feel free to email us at the HoggingUpBBQFestival@verizon.net email if your email was illegible or has changed we can resend.
For those who emailed it: The form indicated for apps to be mailed in. First, so that spam did not block you. Second, we need your signature on the waiver. Feel free to email us at the HoggingUpBBQFestival@verizon.net to check your status.
I called you but haven’t heard anything.
We called back everyone that left us a number on our machine except for one man who did not leave a number who left a general festival inquiry and made fun of our name on the message.
Why aren’t you posting my CBJ name on the website?
We did not ask if we could release your personal information to the world wide web and so we aren’t.
I’m upset that I am on backorder! This festival is close to me! What are my options?
We’re upset too that we can’t fit in everyone who applied. As more teams are added more judges will be selected / accepted in. You can urge your favorite bbq teams to send in their competitor apps so as our contest increases competitors so in turn this will increase our need for judges. Keep in mind not to take it personal.
If you live close, you could still come to the festival as a volunteer. Volunteer apps are on the EVENT FORMS page of the site. Each works a 4 hour shift, gets free three day passes to the festival and a free food voucher
We even have some judges on reserve that have decided to vend items as this festival is close to them.
Do you know any of the judges?
We didn’t know any of the judges personally before processing of their application.
Why did you pick judges different than another contest who picks them close by or first come first served?
Some organizers pick close by, or by tenure, or application receipt date. It’s really up to each organizer as to how they will select their judges.
I don’t want any more mailings. I want to apply elsewhere.
You may withdrawl your application in line by writing “remove” on the updates that are sent to you and we will remove you from future mailings.
It’s March and I have an application I printed but haven’t sent. Can I send it?
Yes, but your application will be under reserve and backorder and we honestly have a lot of folks ahead of you.
Will the same judges be selected next year or what process is used for next year?
Our goal will be the same, trying to get a nice mix of folks from outside of Winchester into the town to help stimulate the local economy, so we anticipate selecting from a variety of states, but there is no guarantees the same folks will be selected.
